Compare OSHC providers side by side
Every Overseas Student Health Cover policy must meet the minimum cover set by the government's OSHC Deed, so the floor is similar across all five approved insurers — Allianz Care (underwritten by Peoplecare), ahm (a Medibank brand), Bupa, Medibank and nib. What genuinely differs is service: direct-billing clinic networks (including on-campus clinics), claiming apps, extras bundles and price. Standard waiting periods apply across the market: 12 months for pregnancy and pre-existing conditions, 2 months for psychiatric care (check each policy document). CBHS stopped selling new OSHC policies in October 2025. Prices change often, so this tool links to live quotes rather than printing stale figures. General information only, not financial advice.
Common questions
Is the cheapest OSHC good enough?
The government OSHC Deed sets the minimum cover every approved insurer must provide, so core hospital and medical cover is similar across the market. The differences are in service: direct-billing networks, claiming apps, extras and price. Cheapest is a reasonable starting point — compare the same cover tier across two or three insurers before deciding.
Can I switch OSHC providers later?
Yes. You can change OSHC providers, and the new insurer typically honours waiting periods you have already served on equivalent cover. You will need a certificate of cover from the new insurer covering your whole visa period.
Do I need OSHC before my visa is granted?
For a subclass 500 student visa, you generally need OSHC in place for your whole intended stay before the visa can be granted, and the policy start date needs to align with your arrival. Check your visa grant notice for the exact condition — a MARA-registered agent can confirm your situation.
What about OVHC for other visas?
OSHC is only for student visa holders and their dependants. Most other temporary visas that carry condition 8501 use Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) instead, sold by a wider set of insurers.
