Paying an Australian visa fee from China? Here's what ImmiAccount actually accepts, what it charges, and what to do if your card is declined.
Fees vary by subclass. A visitor visa, subclass 600, is around $250. A student visa, subclass 500, is around $2,500. Skills in Demand, subclass 482, is $4,015 — one charge covering every stream.
ImmiAccount accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB, plus PayPal, UnionPay and BPAY. One thing it doesn't accept: Diners Club.
Surcharges differ by method. It's 1.40% on Visa, Mastercard, Amex and JCB — the same rate for debit and credit. UnionPay is 1.90%. PayPal is the lowest, at 1.01%.
Most declines from China come down to one thing: international payments not switched on. Enable it through your bank's app or internet banking before you try to pay.
Worried about your SAFE quota? Visa fees are current-account payments, not capital transfers. They don't count against China's USD 50,000 annual individual forex quota.
If your card keeps failing, a dual-currency card, a third party paying on your behalf through your ImmiAccount login, or the Visa Application Centre are all real alternatives.
If you're charged but the payment shows as failed, how long it takes to reverse depends on your bank, not Home Affairs. Contact the Home Affairs Global Service Centre if it doesn't reverse.
Refunds are limited — a refused application doesn't get one. To request one, you complete Form 1424, and Home Affairs states there's no standard time frame for processing it.
Whatever happens, keep your Transaction Reference Number. It's the one thing that proves your payment went through.
