Speech Pathologist to Australia: the SPA assessment and English requirement

Speech pathology isn't Ahpra-regulated — Speech Pathology Australia runs its own overseas assessment, with a higher English requirement than most migration pathways, and its own fee. Here's what it actually asks for, and how ANZSCO 252712 connects to the visa options. Figures as at September 2026.

Transcript

Speech pathology has one of the highest English requirements of any health migration pathway to Australia — and it isn't set by Ahpra at all.

Speech Pathology Australia self-regulates the profession. There's no legal requirement to register, but the Certified Practising Speech Pathologist credential is required by NDIS, Medicare and most employers.

Overseas-qualified applicants apply through SPA's Overseas Qualification Competency Assessment. Phase One eligibility carries its own fee: $230.

The English requirement is higher than standard migration English. IELTS: an overall score of 8.0, with two sub-bands at 8.5 or above and two at 7.5 or above.

Or OET: at least two subtest results in the Band 450 to 500, and two in the Band 400 to 500.

There's an exemption — but it's not about your passport. It applies if your entry-level qualification was undertaken in English at a university in the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland.

ANZSCO 252712, Speech Pathologist, sits on both the MLTSSL and the CSOL, opening the subclass 189, 190, 482 and 491.

SPA doesn't publish a fixed total cost or timeframe for the full assessment beyond the Phase One fee — check its current guide before assuming a number.

The mistake to avoid: assuming the standard migration English level is enough. SPA's own competency assessment asks for a noticeably higher score.
