Transcript

UX and UI designers moving to Australia are classified under ANZSCO code 232414, Web Designer — and that code has no subclass 189.

Three codes cover design work. Web Designer, 232414, for digital product designers. Graphic Designer, 232411, for visual and print designers. Industrial Designer, 232312, for physical product designers.

Web Designer sits on the Core Skills Occupation List. That list supports a subclass 491, with state or territory nomination, or a subclass 190 — but not the points-tested subclass 189.

VETASSESS assesses your design qualification, plus a minimum of 1 year of highly relevant post-qualification design work in the past 5 years.

The main route in is a subclass 482 sponsorship. Major bank design teams, Australian tech companies, consultancies and government digital teams all sponsor designers this way.

There's no official salary schedule for these roles — current job ads are the best guide. For a sponsored role, the salary must also meet the Core Skills Income Threshold, $79,423 from 1 July 2026, plus the market rate for the role.

Specialising in design systems, accessibility, service design or UX research commands a salary premium once that expertise is validated.

For a state-nominated route, NSW and Victoria periodically open subclass 190 nominations for Web Designer — check current rounds directly with each state.

The common mixup: assuming Web Designer opens the same points-tested subclass 189 as most other ICT occupations. It doesn't — 232414 sits on the Core Skills list, not the MLTSSL.
