Working holiday, and your boss just said the word 'sponsorship'? Here's how a 417 or 462 actually gets you to a subclass 482.

Three separate approvals are involved. First, the business becomes an approved sponsor. Second, the business nominates the position. Third, you lodge the 482 visa application.

Working holiday visas carry condition 8547 — a limit of 6 months of work with any one employer, without permission.

You can ask for more time, but submit before the 6 months runs out — Home Affairs recommends at least 2 weeks before it expires.

Before nominating you, the employer usually has to labour market test the role — at least 2 valid job ads, running at least 4 weeks within the 4 months before the nomination.

The Core Skills stream needs an occupation on the CSOL, at least 1 year of relevant experience, and a salary at or above $79,423 a year, from 1 July 2026.

The occupation has to genuinely match the job. Cook and Chef are both on the list and can support a 482 — Cafe or Restaurant Manager has no 482 pathway at all.

If the 482 is lodged while the working holiday visa is still valid, a bridging visa generally takes over once it expires — but its conditions are set at grant, so check VEVO rather than assume.

Sponsorship and nomination costs, including the Skilling Australians Fund levy, sit with the employer by law — they can't be passed on to you.

Streams: Core Skills, Specialist Skills, and Labour Agreement. Most working holiday conversions run through Core Skills — and the clock on 8547 keeps ticking the whole time your application is being decided.
