What this visa is
The Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) is a permanent visa for skilled workers who aren’t sponsored by an employer, family member, or state. You apply through SkillSelect by submitting an Expression of Interest, and you’re only invited to apply once your points score clears the cut-off for your occupation.
Where applications go wrong
189 invitations are competitive. The cut-off shifts each round, your occupation has to be on the MLTSSL, and the skills assessment must be issued by the right authority for your nominated job. A registered agent works the points levers (English, partner skills, professional year, regional study) and times the EOI to give you a real shot at an invitation.
