What this visa is
Most permanent residents apply for citizenship by conferral after meeting the four-year residence requirement (including 12 months as a PR). You sit a citizenship test, attend a ceremony, and become an Australian citizen. There are also pathways by descent (born overseas to an Australian parent) and resumption.
Where applications go wrong
Citizenship looks straightforward until something complicates it: long absences from Australia during the residence period, a criminal record (anywhere in the world), unresolved tax matters, or an ongoing AAT matter.
