Form 929 Has Been Retired: How to Update Your Address or Passport Details

What Form 929 used to cover

Form 929 (Change of address and/or passport details) used to be filled out by two overlapping groups: people with a visa application still being processed, and people who already held a visa and needed to update their details on file. It covered exactly two changes — a new address, and new passport details (renewal, replacement, or a corrected number or expiry date).

Home Affairs has since retired it as a standalone downloadable form. The old form-listing PDF link now redirects to the department's change-in-situation hub, which sends each kind of update down a different path — ImmiAccount first, then a dedicated online web form if ImmiAccount can't be used. There's no single form to download, fill in and lodge any more.

Form 929 vs Form 1022

Form 1022 (Notification of changes in circumstances) is still a live, downloadable PDF and covers a much broader set of changes than Form 929 ever did — relationship status, employment, family composition, and more — with an address or passport change as just one category among many.

Because Form 929 has been retired, Home Affairs' current passport-details and contact-details pages route people to ImmiAccount or to the two dedicated web forms described below, not to Form 1022. Form 1022 is still the right form when several things have changed at once — for example, a passport renewal alongside a legal name change or a new relationship status — since it's designed to capture a broader circumstance change in one submission. Updating passport details now: ImmiAccount, then a web form

The quickest way to tell Home Affairs about a new passport is to update it in ImmiAccount: log in, select the application, select 'Edit' or 'View details', select 'Update details', then 'Change of passport details', select the applicant, enter the new passport number and expiry date and the reason for the change, and submit. Home Affairs links the new passport to the application or existing visa within 3 business days.

ImmiAccount can't be used in a specific set of cases: the application can't be imported into ImmiAccount; the travel document is a Titre de Voyage or Certificate of Identity; the application was for a partner visa and isn't visible in ImmiAccount; the application ID on the acknowledgement letter begins with 'IRIS'; there's been a change of sex or gender; or the date of birth has changed on the new passport. In any of these, the New Passport Details web form is used instead, processed within 14 days. This isn't for holders of the Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) — an ETA can't be transferred to a new passport, so a new ETA is applied for instead — and it isn't for people notifying a new Australian passport, who use the separate travel-documents process for citizens and permanent residents.

A change of sex or gender needs one of: a statement from a registered medical practitioner or registered psychologist specifying the gender; a valid Australian government travel document (such as a passport) specifying the gender; or a state or territory birth certificate specifying the gender. A document from a state or territory Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages recognising a change of sex, gender, or both, is also accepted.

Why a new passport mid-application still matters

Australian visas are electronically linked to a specific passport number, not to the person generally. If a visa is granted before Home Affairs has the updated passport details, the grant can end up linked to the wrong document, which can cause problems at the border.

If a visa has already been granted and it's only afterward discovered that it's linked to an old, cancelled or replaced passport, the fix is to contact Home Affairs directly to have the visa re-associated with the current passport — this is a separate step from a routine passport-details update, and may need direct contact with the department in addition to the ImmiAccount update or web form.

Until an update is processed, it's sensible to travel with both the new passport and the old one (even if cancelled), where the visa grant is linked to the old document, since some border checks cross-reference the document a visa was originally granted against.

Updating an address or other contact details

Contact details — email address, phone number, or residential or postal address — are also updated fastest through ImmiAccount, where the change takes effect instantly, via the 'After you apply' section once logged in.

If the application can't be imported into ImmiAccount, the Update contact details form is used instead. Home Affairs states it updates contact details within 14 days of that form being submitted. There's no separate Form 929 step in either path any more.

What is Form 929 used for?

Should I use Form 929 or Form 1022 for a passport renewal?

Form 929 no longer exists. Update a passport renewal through ImmiAccount ('Update details' then 'Change of passport details'), or the New Passport Details web form if ImmiAccount can't be used for your case. Form 1022 remains a separate, still-current form for a broader set of changed circumstances.

Can I update my passport details in ImmiAccount without submitting a form?

Yes — logging in to ImmiAccount and selecting 'Update details' then 'Change of passport details' is the quickest way, and Home Affairs links the new passport within 3 business days. It only doesn't work in specific cases (an application that can't be imported, a Titre de Voyage or Certificate of Identity, a partner visa not visible in ImmiAccount, an 'IRIS' application ID, or a change of sex, gender or date of birth), where the New Passport Details web form is used instead.

What happens if my visa is linked to an old passport?

If a visa grant is electronically linked to a passport that's since been renewed, replaced, or cancelled, this can cause problems at the border. Contact the Department to have the visa re-associated with your current passport, and in the meantime consider carrying both your current and old passport when travelling.

Is Form 929 free to lodge?

There's no Form 929 to lodge any more. Updating passport or contact details through ImmiAccount, the New Passport Details web form, or the Update contact details form carries no charge either way.

Do visa holders (not just applicants) need to update these details?

Yes. Both people with a pending application and people who already hold a visa update their address or passport details the same way — through ImmiAccount, or the relevant web form if ImmiAccount can't be used.
