Finding your HAP ID and tracking health examination status in ImmiAccount

Migratio Editorial · Last updated

TL;DR: Your HAP ID is generated by ImmiAccount when a health examination is required for your visa application. You can find it in the health assessment section of your application, use it to generate a referral letter, and book an appointment at a Bupa Medical Visa Services panel clinic. Health status indicators in ImmiAccount show whether your examination results have been received and cleared.

Most Australian visa applications require the applicant to undergo a health examination. The process is managed through a system called HAP — Health Assessment Protocol — and your unique identifier within that system is your HAP ID. Everything from generating the referral letter to checking whether the Department has received your results runs through ImmiAccount. This article explains what a HAP ID is, where to locate it, how to generate the referral letter you need for your clinic appointment, how to book with a Bupa panel clinic, and how to interpret the health status indicators that appear in your application. If you have not set up your ImmiAccount yet, start with the ImmiAccount setup guide.

What a HAP ID is

HAP stands for Health Assessment Protocol. Your HAP ID is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to your health case within the Department's health processing system. It links your health examination results to your visa application. The HAP ID is generated automatically by ImmiAccount when you reach the health examination stage of your application, or when the Department requests health examinations as part of processing.

Every applicant included in the visa application (primary applicant and any family members) receives their own separate HAP ID. The code is used by the panel clinic to upload your examination results directly to the Department's system — you do not carry physical results between the clinic and the Department.

Where to find your HAP ID in ImmiAccount

To locate your HAP ID:

1. Log in to ImmiAccount at `online.immi.gov.au`.
2. Open the visa application that requires the health examination.
3. Navigate to the health assessment section. Depending on the visa subclass, this may be labelled "Health" or "Health assessment" in the left-hand menu or within the application tabs.
4. Your HAP ID is displayed alongside your name and date of birth. If family members are included, each person's HAP ID appears on a separate line.

If you have lodged your application but the health section does not yet show a HAP ID, it may be that the health requirement has not been triggered. Some visa subclasses require you to actively click a button such as "Organise your health examinations" to generate the HAP ID. Others only generate it when a case officer requests it during processing.

Write down or save your HAP ID — you will need to provide it when booking your clinic appointment.

How to generate a health examination referral letter

The referral letter is a PDF document generated through ImmiAccount that you take to your health examination appointment. It contains your HAP ID, personal details, and the specific examinations you are required to complete (e.g., medical examination, chest x-ray, HIV test).

To generate the referral letter:

1. In ImmiAccount, go to the health assessment section of your application.
2. Click the link to organise health examinations (the exact wording varies by application type).
3. Answer the preliminary health questions (these ask about your intended duration in Australia and whether you will work in certain occupations, which determines the type of examination required).
4. After completing the questions, click to generate the referral letter. It downloads as a PDF.

Print the referral letter and take it to your panel clinic appointment. The clinic will not conduct the examination without it. Make sure the letter is a standard PDF — if your browser generates a form-fillable version, flatten it before printing.

How to book with a Bupa panel clinic

Health examinations for Australian visas must be conducted by a doctor at a Department-approved panel clinic. In Australia, Bupa Medical Visa Services operates the panel clinics. Outside Australia, the Department maintains a list of approved panel physicians in each country.

To book an appointment:

1. Visit the Bupa Medical Visa Services website (for Australian clinics) or the Department's panel physician search on the Home Affairs website (for clinics outside Australia).
2. Select a clinic location and available appointment time.
3. Provide your HAP ID during booking. The clinic uses this to confirm which examinations you need.
4. Bring to the appointment: your printed referral letter, your passport (original, not a copy), passport-sized photographs (if specified by the clinic), and any existing medical reports the clinic has requested.

Appointment availability varies by location and season. In peak periods (such as the start of university semesters when student visa health checks spike), wait times for appointments can extend to several weeks. Book as early as possible after generating your referral letter.

Health status indicators in ImmiAccount

After your examination, the panel clinic uploads the results directly to the Department's health processing system. You can track the progress in ImmiAccount through status indicators in the health assessment section. Common statuses include:

- Health examinations required — The HAP ID has been generated and you need to attend a clinic appointment. No results have been received yet.
- Health examinations submitted/in progress — The clinic has uploaded your results and the Department's health operations centre is processing them.
- Health clearance provided — Your health results have been assessed and you meet the health requirement. No further health-related action is needed from you.
- Further health information requested — The health operations centre requires additional information, tests, or specialist reports. Check ImmiAccount for details of what is needed and the deadline for providing it.
- Health assessment deferred — Your results are under review and a decision has not yet been made. This can occur if results are borderline or require specialist review within the Department.

The time between your examination and a health clearance varies. Straightforward cases can be cleared within a few days. Cases requiring further review — particularly those involving specialist referrals or additional tests — can take weeks or months.

What "health clearance provided" means

When your health status shows "Health clearance provided," it means the Department's health operations centre has assessed your examination results and determined that you meet the health requirement for your visa application. This does not mean your visa has been granted — health is only one component of the visa assessment. Character checks, identity verification, and other criteria still need to be satisfied.

Health clearances are typically valid for 12 months from the date of the examination. If your visa application is still being processed after 12 months, you may be asked to undergo a new examination. ImmiAccount will generate a new HAP ID and referral letter if this occurs.
