Moving from the UK to Brisbane

Migratio Editorial · Last updated

TL;DR: 95,284 people born in England were counted living in Greater Brisbane at the 2021 Census — 3.8% of the city's population, the third-largest overseas-born group after New Zealand and ahead of India (ABS QuickStats, 2021). A UK driving licence is on Australia's recognised-country list, so it converts to a Queensland licence without a driving test. The UK is one of only 11 countries with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, though that doesn't remove the need for OSHC or OVHC depending on your visa. None of this is specific to which visa reaches Brisbane — that's the same national process covered on Migratio's UK-to-Australia guide.

Migratio's UK-to-Australia guide covers the visa pathways, and its Brisbane living guide covers rent, climate and jobs generally. This page is neither of those — it's the handful of things that are genuinely different when the person moving is British and the city is Brisbane specifically: how many England-born people are already there, what Queensland's own state nomination programme asks for, whether a UK driving licence needs a test, and what the UK's reciprocal health agreement actually gets you once you land.

How many British people are actually in Brisbane

The 2021 Census (the most recent conducted) recorded 95,284 England-born residents in Greater Brisbane — 3.8% of the city's population, against 3.6% for England-born people nationally, so Brisbane runs slightly above the national share. It's the third-largest overseas country-of-birth group in the city, behind New Zealand (111,649, 4.4%) and ahead of India (51,650, 2.0%), China (41,978, 1.7%) and the Philippines (27,907, 1.1%).

One honest caveat: the ABS reports England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as separate country-of-birth categories, not as a single "United Kingdom" figure. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland-born residents exist in Brisbane too but didn't place in the city's six largest groups, so the true UK-born total is higher than 95,284 — this page states only the figure the Census itself publishes, rather than estimating the rest.

Queensland's own nomination programme

If a skilled visa is the route in, Queensland runs its own state nomination programme for the subclass 190 and 491 through Migration Queensland, separate from the national points test. It uses a Registration of Interest system with separate onshore and offshore streams, and Queensland maintains its own Skills List rather than deferring entirely to the national one.

Onshore applicants for the subclass 190 need to already be living and working in the nominated occupation in Queensland for at least 9 months before applying; for the regional subclass 491, at least 6 months in regional Queensland. Offshore applicants register without that requirement but Migration Queensland weighs qualifications, work experience, salary, location, age, English and partner skills when deciding who to invite. A nomination carries a commitment to remain in Queensland for at least 2 years (subclass 190) or regional Queensland for 3 years (subclass 491). None of this changes for a British applicant specifically — the same programme applies to every nationality — but it's a genuinely separate process from the visa application itself, verified against Migration Queensland's own site (asAt 19 Aug 2026).

Converting a UK driving licence in Queensland

The United Kingdom is on Australia's recognised-country list under the Austroads Recognised Overseas Licences Scheme, alongside the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and most of Western Europe. In practice that means a UK licence holder can transfer to a Queensland licence — an "equivalent-class transfer" — without sitting the knowledge test or the practical driving test, provided the licence hasn't expired for too long and the applicant passes the standard eyesight test and provides proof of identity and address.

That's a real advantage over India or the Philippines, whose licence holders aren't recognised and must pass both tests as if they'd never driven before. Migratio's Queensland licence-conversion guide and the recognised-countries explainer cover the document checklist and process in full.

The Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, and what it doesn't cover

The United Kingdom is one of just 11 countries with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia — the others are Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Ireland, Slovenia and Sweden. Once enrolled in Medicare, a UK citizen with RHCA access gets medically necessary treatment in Australian public hospitals and subsidised PBS medicines on the same terms as an Australian resident.

What it doesn't do is replace a visa's own health-insurance condition. A UK citizen on a student visa still needs OSHC unless they're one of the three nationalities exempted for that specific reason (Norway, Sweden, Belgium — the UK isn't among them), and a UK citizen on a temporary skilled or graduate visa may still need OVHC or adequate cover as a visa condition, separate from anything the RHCA provides. The RHCA is a genuine, real benefit for a British arrival — it just isn't a substitute for the cover a visa condition actually requires.

What stays the same regardless of city

The visa pathway itself — Working Holiday, skilled migration, partner, employer-sponsored — doesn't change because the destination is Brisbane rather than Sydney or Perth; that's covered in full on Migratio's UK-to-Australia overview and visa-options pages. A UK pension held before the move (workplace or state pension) has its own separate set of Australian tax and transfer rules that also don't vary by city, covered on Migratio's UK pension transfer guide. And Brisbane's rent, climate and job market are the same for a British arrival as for anyone else — Migratio's Brisbane living guide covers those in full rather than repeating them here.

What this page can't tell you

It can't tell you whether you'd be invited under Queensland's nomination programme, or whether your specific occupation is on Queensland's current Skills List — that depends on individual circumstances and a list that changes. It can't tell you what you'd personally be offered for work, or whether Brisbane is the right city for your situation. If the visa side of a move to Queensland is the open question, Migratio can match you with a MARA-registered migration agent who works with UK applicants and Queensland nominations specifically.

Frequently asked questions

How many British people live in Brisbane?

The 2021 Census counted 95,284 England-born residents in Greater Brisbane — 3.8% of the city's population, the third-largest overseas country-of-birth group after New Zealand and ahead of India. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are counted separately by the ABS and aren't included in that figure.

Do I need to pass a driving test to use a UK licence in Queensland?

No. The UK is on Australia's recognised-country list, so a UK licence converts to a Queensland licence without the knowledge or practical driving test — just an eyesight test and standard identity and address documents.

Does the UK have a health care agreement with Australia?

Yes. The UK is 1 of 11 countries with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, giving access to Medicare-covered public hospital treatment. It doesn't replace OSHC or OVHC if your visa requires them.

Is Queensland's skilled migration nomination different from other states?

Yes. Queensland runs its own Registration of Interest system through Migration Queensland with separate onshore and offshore streams and its own Skills List, distinct from the national points test and from other states' programmes.

How long do I need to live in Queensland before applying for state nomination?

For onshore subclass 190 applicants: at least 9 months living and working in the nominated occupation in Queensland. For onshore subclass 491: at least 6 months in regional Queensland. Offshore applicants don't need this, but are assessed on other factors.

What about my UK pension if I move to Brisbane?

UK pension transfers to Australia have their own tax and process rules that don't vary by city — Migratio's dedicated guide to transferring a UK pension to Australia covers the QROPS process and tax treatment in full.

Is Brisbane's cost of living relevant to where I'm moving from?

Rent and cost of living in Brisbane are the same question regardless of nationality — Migratio's Brisbane living guide covers current rent figures, suburbs and the job market without a UK-specific angle, because there isn't one.
