UK Social Workers: How to Move to Australia in 2026
Migratio Editorial · Last updated
TL;DR: Social Worker sits on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List and is assessed by the AASW. UK-qualified social workers can be exempt from AASW's own IELTS requirement if their secondary and tertiary education was in English in a recognised country. Unlike nursing or medicine, social work isn't a nationally regulated profession in Australia — South Australia is currently the only state requiring statutory registration to practise.
Australia's social services sector — child protection, disability support under the NDIS, aged care, mental health, community services — has real and ongoing demand for qualified social workers. For UK-trained social workers, the migration pathway runs through the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), and the profession works differently in Australia than it does in the UK in one important respect: it isn't universally a licensed, regulated profession here.
This guide covers the AASW assessment, what 'unregulated' actually means in practice, visa options and costs.
The AASW skills assessment
The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is the designated assessing authority for Social Worker (ANZSCO 272511). Its Migration and Eligibility Assessment checks whether your qualification is comparable to an AASW-accredited Bachelor or Master's degree in social work.
Core requirements include a dedicated social work qualification (not a related discipline with some social work content), and at least 980 hours of supervised field education across at least two placements with contrasting practice settings, with one placement in direct practice. Assessment fees vary — reported figures range from roughly $400 to $660 depending on membership status and correspondence address, so check AASW's current fee schedule directly rather than relying on a single number. Standard processing runs 8 to 12 weeks, with positive outcomes valid for three years.
The AASW English language exemption
AASW's own English requirement is separate from the Home Affairs visa requirement, and it's stricter than a simple passport check: the standard requirement is IELTS Academic with 7.0 in each of the four bands.
There is an exemption, but it has two parts, not one. You may be exempt from sitting IELTS if you completed your secondary education in English in a recognised country — the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the USA or Australia — AND completed at least three years of full-time tertiary study at Bachelor level or higher, in English, in one of those same countries. Both conditions need to be met on the same country (or countries drawn from that list); a UK secondary education alone, without an English-taught tertiary qualification from that list, doesn't satisfy it on its own. Check your own documentation against both requirements before assuming the exemption applies.
Registration — social work isn't regulated the way nursing is
This is the detail that surprises many UK social workers, where Social Work England (or the equivalent body in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland) runs a mandatory statutory register. In Australia, social work is not currently a nationally regulated profession — there's no legal requirement to be registered to call yourself a social worker or practise as one, and AASW membership is voluntary rather than a statutory licence. AHPRA (which regulates nursing, medicine and other health professions) has no jurisdiction over social work, and a member of the public can't lodge a misconduct complaint with AHPRA against a social worker the way they could against a nurse.
The one current exception is South Australia, which introduced statutory registration for anyone practising as a social worker or delivering social work services to South Australian service users, effective from 1 July 2025 — the only state to do so. In every other state and territory, many employers require AASW eligibility as a condition of employment even though the law doesn't mandate it, so a positive AASW assessment still matters practically, just not as a legal licence to practise.
Visa options for UK social workers
Social Worker (ANZSCO 272511) sits on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, opening the standard skilled pathways.
Skilled Independent (subclass 189) — permanent residence without sponsorship, based on a positive AASW assessment and a competitive points score.
Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) — state or regional nomination is often more accessible than the 189 for social workers, since most states list the occupation on their own nomination criteria given ongoing demand across child protection, disability and community services.
Skills in Demand (subclass 482) — direct sponsorship by a state government department, NDIS provider, community services organisation or aged care provider, no points test, leading to permanent residence via the subclass 186.
Costs and timeline
A realistic cost picture for a UK social worker pursuing the subclass 190 pathway, current as at 1 July 2026:
| Item | AUD |
|---|---|
| AASW Migration and Eligibility Assessment | ~400–660 |
| Subclass 190 visa application (primary) | 6,140 |
| Health examination | 350–500 |
| UK police certificate (ACRO) | ~35 |
Visa application charges are current as at 1 July 2026. Total estimate for a single applicant, without an agent or partner: roughly AUD 6,900 to AUD 7,300.
Timeline: AASW assessment (8 to 12 weeks), visa processing (typically 3 to 6 months for the 190). If you intend to work in South Australia, factor in the separate statutory registration process on top of any employer-required AASW eligibility.
Where the demand is
Child protection services in every state and territory face ongoing recruitment pressure, particularly in regional and remote areas. The NDIS has created substantial demand for social workers in disability support coordination, assessment and planning roles — a sector that barely existed in its current form a decade ago and continues to expand. Aged care and mental health services, including community mental health teams and hospital-based social work, are also active recruiters, especially outside the major capitals where competition for roles is lower.
Government departments (state child protection and family services agencies) are typically large, experienced employers of overseas-qualified social workers and are used to the AASW assessment timeline.
Next steps
- Confirm your degree qualifies as a dedicated social work qualification, not a related discipline, before applying to AASW.
- Check your own schooling and tertiary study against both parts of the AASW English exemption.
- If South Australia is your destination, look into its statutory registration scheme separately from AASW eligibility.
- Talk to a MARA-registered agent about the visa pathway that fits your circumstances — Migratio lets you compare consultation fees from agents who handle your visa (comparing is free; consults are typically $150–$300 and you pay only if you book).
Frequently asked questions
Is social work a regulated profession in Australia?
Not nationally. Unlike nursing or medicine, there's no legal requirement to be registered to practise as a social worker in most of Australia. AASW membership is a voluntary professional credential, though many employers require it. South Australia is the only state with statutory registration, effective from 1 July 2025.
Do UK social workers need IELTS for AASW assessment?
Not necessarily. You may be exempt if you completed both your secondary education AND at least three years of tertiary study, in English, in a recognised country — which includes the UK. If either half of that doesn't apply to you, IELTS Academic (7.0 in each band) is required.
Which visa subclasses are open to UK social workers?
Social Worker sits on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, opening the subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), 190 (Skilled Nominated), 491 (Skilled Work Regional) and 482 (Skills in Demand, employer-sponsored), with a pathway to the permanent 186.
How much supervised placement experience does AASW require?
At least 980 hours of field education across a minimum of two placements with contrasting practice settings, with at least one placement in direct practice.
Do I need to register with AHPRA as a social worker?
No. AHPRA regulates nursing, medicine and several other health professions, but has no jurisdiction over social work in Australia. The relevant body is the AASW (a professional association, not a statutory regulator), except in South Australia's new registration scheme.
