What the assessment actually involves
Hotel or Motel Manager is one of the two widest-reaching codes in this family — it reaches Employer Nomination, state nomination, the graduate 407, Skills in Demand, Skilled Work Regional and Skills in Demand Regional. It is Group C, AQF Diploma or higher, four employment pathways. In 2024 VETASSESS updated this code's criteria after consulting the Australian Hotels Association, adding an explicit expectation of awareness of body corporate legislation — relevant where the property is a serviced-apartment complex with individually owned units rather than a single-owner hotel.
Where these applications come unstuck
VETASSESS's own suitable/excluded list for this code rules out Bed and Breakfast Operator and, by name, Serviced Apartment Manager — yet the 2024 criteria update added serviced-apartment knowledge to this same code's assessment. Those two facts sit oddly together: the exclusion list says a serviced apartment manager belongs elsewhere, while the assessment criteria now specifically probe for body-corporate awareness. Which one governs in practice was not resolved in VETASSESS's own published material — an applicant managing serviced apartments should not assume either reading without checking directly.
An honest read on this pathway
The broad list access here is real and valuable — this is one of only two hospitality codes reaching Employer Nomination and Skills in Demand sponsorship outright, no labour agreement required. But list access answers the visa question only. Most Australian licensed venues need a separate, state-issued approved-manager or licensee qualification to legally run the floor, and this code's own VETASSESS page carries no licensing flag at all — its silence should not be mistaken for confirmation none is needed.
VETASSESS assesses qualifications and employment separately. Both need documentation that agrees with itself. The Employment History Builder and Document Vault organise each trail before you lodge.
