Skills assessment
A positive skills assessment for Financial Investment Adviser comes from:
- Vocational Education and Training Assessment Services (VETASSESS) (official site) · our guide to the VETASSESS process
What the assessment actually involves
VETASSESS assesses Financial Investment Adviser under Group B, against a highly relevant field list that includes Finance, Business, Commerce, Accounting and Economics. Its own occupation description centres on developing financial plans and giving personal advice on investment strategies to individuals and organisations. This is the one occupation in the whole family whose VETASSESS page carries a dedicated Licensing and Registration section, sourced by VETASSESS to the Financial Advice Association Australia, on top of the standard migration-only disclaimer every occupation page carries.
Where these applications come unstuck
The confusable-code risk sits with Financial Investment Manager, its direct sibling: the two occupations exclude each other by ANZSCO code on their own pages, and the practical test is whether the work is personal advice to an individual client (Adviser) or managing pooled funds without giving advice directly to clients (Manager). Getting this wrong risks both a task-mismatch finding and, separately, operating retail-client advice work without the Financial Adviser Register registration ASIC requires for it.
An honest read on this pathway
Financial Investment Adviser sits on STSOL and CSOL and reaches 482 and 186, unlike Financial Investment Manager, which does not. Providing retail advice also requires Financial Adviser Register registration, generally including a professional year unless the existing-provider exemption applies — a separate individual licensing track the skills assessment itself does not clear, and which does not apply to Manager in the same form.
VETASSESS assesses qualifications and employment separately. Both need documentation that agrees with itself. The Employment History Builder and Document Vault organise each trail before you lodge.
