Skills assessment
A positive skills assessment for Human Resource Adviser comes from:
- Vocational Education and Training Assessment Services (VETASSESS) (official site) · our guide to the VETASSESS process
What the assessment actually involves
VETASSESS assesses Human Resource Adviser as a Group B occupation, requiring a qualification comparable to an Australian Bachelor degree or higher, with four alternative pathways trading field relevance for extra years of employment. Highly relevant fields include human resource management or strategy, organisational development or psychology, change management, workforce analytics, diversity and inclusion, employment relations, and learning and development. The code sits on the ROL and CSOL lists rather than STSOL, so it reaches employer sponsorship and nomination visas but not state nomination. An organisational chart here is optional, not mandatory — VETASSESS's own wording says applicants "may" submit one to clarify seniority, unlike the mandatory chart some sibling codes require.
Where these applications come unstuck
The costliest mistake is nominating this code for work that is really recruitment or industrial-relations focused. VETASSESS's own page excludes Recruitment Consultant and Workplace Relations Adviser by name, and both of those sibling codes exclude Human Resource Adviser right back — a fully closed triangle with no overlap between any of the three. Someone whose actual work is candidate sourcing and placement, or enterprise bargaining and union negotiation, will not have that evidence accepted here even if their job title reads "HR." Because the chart is optional, applicants also sometimes under-evidence the seniority the "adviser" framing assumes.
An honest read on this pathway
This is a workable pathway for generalist HR practitioners whose qualification and employment history sit cleanly inside the named field list. Its visa reach is narrower than its sibling Recruitment Consultant, though, because it carries ROL rather than STSOL and so misses state nomination entirely. An applicant choosing between adjacent HR titles purely to chase the wider visa spread, rather than on what the role actually involved, is choosing against the very distinction VETASSESS uses to keep the three codes apart.
VETASSESS assesses qualifications and employment separately. Both need documentation that agrees with itself. The Employment History Builder and Document Vault organise each trail before you lodge.
