Which lists is Actuary on?

MLTSSL — Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. The widest list — occupations on the MLTSSL can access the points-tested permanent skilled visas including the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), which needs no state nomination or employer.

CSOL — Core Skills Occupation List. The employer-sponsorship list — occupations on the CSOL can be nominated for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) and the Employer Nomination Scheme 186.

VETASSESS assesses Actuary under Group A: a single pathway requiring a Bachelor degree or higher in a highly relevant field plus one year of post-qualification, highly relevant employment within the last five years. Actuarial Science, Actuarial Studies and Actuarial Practice are the named highly relevant majors; other fields such as Mathematics or Statistics are accepted only case by case, and only where the transcript covers all six core principle subjects the Actuaries Institute specifies.

Applicants with a Mathematics or Statistics degree sometimes assume it is close enough without providing the subject-by-subject mapping VETASSESS asks for against the Actuaries Institute's six core subjects, risking a qualification-relevance finding despite genuinely relevant training. Its own page also excludes Mathematician, Statistician, Economist, Financial Investment Adviser and Financial Investment Manager by name, so evidence built around any of those adjacent roles will not carry over.

Actuary sits on MLTSSL and CSOL and reaches all eight visas this family covers, including 482 and 186 — the broadest reach any occupation here has. A positive assessment supports the visa; it is not the Actuaries Institute's own Associate or Fellow credential, a separate and materially longer study-and-experience track that most senior actuarial employers in Australia still look for on top of it.
