What the assessment actually involves
Wine Maker is one of only two Group B occupations in this whole family (the other is Conservator), meaning it runs four separate assessment pathways rather than one, with employment requirements ranging from one to six years depending on how closely the qualification field matches. Pathway 1 mirrors the standard Group A clause — at least one year of post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level within the last five years, 20 hours or more a week, and highly relevant to the occupation — but Pathways 2 through 4 let a less-relevant field of study be offset with additional years of employment, up to six years total, which no other checked occupation in this family offers.
Where these applications come unstuck
The Group B structure is a genuine advantage for a not-quite-matching qualification, but it is not a shortcut: more employment years are required as the field-of-study match weakens, and the pathway still has to be evidenced correctly for the specific route claimed. Confusing Wine Maker with Food Technologist or Chemist is the other risk — both of those pages exclude Wine Maker by name, so evidence built around general food-science or chemistry work, rather than winemaking specifically, does not transfer across even though all three sit in the same broader chemical-sciences unit group.
An honest read on this pathway
Wine Maker sits on ROL and CSOL only — no MLTSSL access at all — reaching 186, 407, 482, 491 and 494, with no 189, 190 or 485. That's the weakest list position of any occupation in the chemical-sciences cluster and one of the weaker positions in the whole family: no points-tested EOI, no post-study 485 route, employer sponsorship or a regional/provisional pathway are the only doors open. The Group B flexibility on qualification helps a not-quite-matching degree get assessed at all; it does not change which visas the code can be used for once assessed.
VETASSESS assesses qualifications and employment separately. Both need documentation that agrees with itself. The Employment History Builder and Document Vault organise each trail before you lodge.
