Which lists is Biochemist on?

MLTSSL — Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. The widest list — occupations on the MLTSSL can access the points-tested permanent skilled visas including the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), which needs no state nomination or employer.

CSOL — Core Skills Occupation List. The employer-sponsorship list — occupations on the CSOL can be nominated for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) and the Employer Nomination Scheme 186.

Processing priority

Biochemist isn't in any of the ANZSCO groups that Directions 121 and 122 list for the priority sectors. Some of the first group is defined by the job rather than the code: a nominated position directly involved in agriculture, aquaculture or fishing, one that directly supports mining, oil and gas or coal production, or one related to defence. Otherwise the application is processed after the priority sectors. For the permanent and provisional skilled visas, applicants who were in Australia when they applied come next, then those who applied from outside Australia. For the 482, Specialist Skills stream applications come before both.

VETASSESS describes a Biochemist as someone who studies the biochemistry of living organisms and the molecular structure and function of related components. It is a Group A occupation, needing a bachelor's degree or higher in a highly relevant field plus at least one year of post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level within the last five years. Its own page excludes Biotechnologist, Microbiologist, Industrial Pharmacist and Chemistry Technician, drawing a firm boundary against the most similarly-titled and most commonly adjacent laboratory-science occupations in the broader natural-sciences family, not just its immediate unit-group siblings.

Where these applications come unstuck

Biotechnologist's own page names Biochemist as an exclusion in the reverse direction too — this is a genuine mutual exclusion between two closely related molecular-science codes, not a one-way boundary. A laboratory career spanning both molecular biochemistry and applied biotechnology work needs to be evidenced against whichever side the bulk of the duties actually sit on, since VETASSESS reads the two as distinct occupations rather than two names for the same underlying laboratory-science career.

Biochemist carries MLTSSL and CSOL, reaching all eight visas in this family — the same strong list position as its excluded neighbour Biotechnologist, so there is no list-access reason to prefer one over the other. That means the mutual exclusion between them is purely a matter of getting the occupation description right, not a strategic trade-off between a stronger and a weaker code; both pathways are equally open once the correct one is nominated.
