Skills assessment
A positive skills assessment for Secondary School Teacher comes from:
- Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership Limited (AITSL) (official site) · our guide to the AITSL process
What the assessment actually involves
AITSL assesses this code on qualifications alone. The bar is at least four years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education study including a relevant initial teacher education qualification — a single four-year degree, or a shorter bachelor's combined with a graduate teaching qualification. Inside that study, at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice must have been completed on a genuine school placement, formally assessed by the university, with students in the secondary age range; it doesn't need to cover every age in that range, so a placement with 15–17 year-olds can satisfy a broader 13–18 nomination. Qualifications outside the ITE component only count toward the four years at Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree level or higher.
Where these applications come unstuck
Post-qualification classroom experience does not backfill a short supervised-teaching-practice record — AITSL is explicit that STP undertaken before or after the ITE qualification doesn't count, so applicants whose training programs ran a thin or informally documented placement have no way to top it up later. English proficiency accepts only Academic IELTS at 7.0 reading/writing and 8.0 speaking/listening within three years, or a full four years of study completed in one of six named English-speaking countries with every ITE component — including the placement — inside one of them; substitutes like PTE, TOEFL or Cambridge are explicitly rejected. Australian registration, even if held, does not replace the qualification and English evidence AITSL requires.
An honest read on this pathway
Secondary School Teacher sits on both the MLTSSL and CSOL, giving it the widest visa spread in this family including 189 and 485. A positive AITSL outcome is a migration assessment, not a right to teach — the state you move to runs its own independent registration check against the same underlying evidence (qualification, the 45-day placement, English), through a body like NESA or VIT, and that check doesn't defer to AITSL's letter or transfer if you later move states. A state-specific Working With Children Check is a further, separate requirement before you can be employed in a school.
Whichever authority assesses you, the paperwork is the part applicants underestimate. The Document Vault keeps a single register of every document, what it was needed for, and what is still missing.
