Which lists is Special Needs Teacher on?

MLTSSL — Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. The widest list — occupations on the MLTSSL can access the points-tested permanent skilled visas including the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), which needs no state nomination or employer.

CSOL — Core Skills Occupation List. The employer-sponsorship list — occupations on the CSOL can be nominated for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) and the Employer Nomination Scheme 186.

Visas this occupation can access

Being on a list makes the occupation nominatable for these visas — each visa still has its own requirements (points, age, English, a positive skills assessment, and for sponsored visas a willing employer or state).

Skills assessment

A positive skills assessment for Special Needs Teacher comes from:

What the assessment actually involves

AITSL assesses this code on two criteria. The qualification bar is four years of higher education including a recognised initial teacher education (ITE) qualification, with at least one year full-time study of special needs at Bachelor level or higher on top of it. Inside the ITE component you need a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with real school students, formally assessed on placement, not simulated in a university setting. If your special needs study sat inside the ITE degree itself, AITSL requires that placement to have been completed specifically in a special needs setting. English is Academic IELTS only, at least 7.0 in reading and writing and 8.0 in speaking and listening, with no substitute test accepted.

Where these applications come unstuck

AITSL defines its own nec code by exclusion of this one, so choosing between Special Needs Teacher and Special Education Teachers nec means checking which description your actual specialisation fits, not which checklist reads easier. AITSL never counts classroom work completed after you finished your ITE qualification toward the 45-day placement requirement, so a genuine shortfall in documented supervised practice cannot be closed after the fact. And once AITSL issues an outcome, it will not accept a request to change the nominated occupation, so misreading which of the four related codes fits your case is effectively a one-shot decision.

An honest read on this pathway

This is a genuinely open pathway. Special Needs Teacher sits on the MLTSSL, reaching every visa subclass in this family including the independent 189 and the 485 graduate visa, unlike Middle School Teacher two doors down which reaches neither. AITSL is explicit that a positive outcome is a migration document, not a teaching licence: state or territory teacher registration, and a separate Working With Children check, both still have to be completed independently before anyone can actually stand in a classroom. Budget real time for gathering placement records and transcripts before assuming registration follows automatically.

Whichever authority assesses you, the paperwork is the part applicants underestimate. The Document Vault keeps a single register of every document, what it was needed for, and what is still missing.
