Sonographer sits on the same ASMIRT overseas-assessment panel as Medical Diagnostic Radiographer and Radiation Therapist, and the same two-year post-qualification clinical experience bar applies, with a one-year concession for New Zealand graduates of a pre-approved course. What makes this code genuinely different is what happens after a positive outcome. ASMIRT states directly, for sonography specifically, that "a successful overseas assessment does not guarantee membership of the ASMIRT, employment in Australia or registration as a practitioner with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia" — naming the Board even though sonographers are not actually registered by it, which is the trap this code carries and the other two on the panel do not.

Where these applications come unstuck

Sonography is not an AHPRA-protected title. The credentialing body is the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR), an independent registry rather than a National Board, and ASAR states this outright: "ASAR is not responsible for assessing overseas-qualified Sonographers for immigration purposes. Sonographers in this situation must contact the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT)." The practical consequence is the opposite of the other two ASMIRT codes: instead of two separate applications to two different bodies, the ASMIRT migration assessment and the ASAR practising credential form one connected pipeline, with the ASMIRT outcome normally carried straight across rather than reassessed from scratch by a second authority.

An honest read on this pathway

Sonographer reaches the same MLTSSL-plus-CSOL list strength as the other two ASMIRT codes, including access to 189. Where it differs is procedural, not regulatory in the AHPRA sense: because ASAR is not a National Board, this code sidesteps the separate-registration trap that catches Diagnostic Radiographer and Radiation Therapist applicants. ASAR's own site describes the handoff as normally straightforward once ASMIRT has issued a positive outcome: "granting of accreditation by ASAR is usually a simple matter of sending the ASMIRT statement to the ASAR Registry." That is still a real second step with its own paperwork, and this guide did not verify ASAR's own accreditation requirements beyond that one statement — confirm the rest directly at asar.com.au.
