Skills assessment
A positive skills assessment for Paediatric Surgeon comes from:
- Medical Board of Australia (MedBA) (official site)
What the assessment actually involves
Paediatric Surgery is one of RACS' nine named surgical specialties, assessed through the same Specialist Assessment process as the college's other eight. RACS reviews scope of practice, training history, recent specialist practice and continuing development on paper first, and only proceeds to interview if that review does not already resolve the case to "not comparable" — where it does, the interview component of the assessment fee is refunded rather than charged.
Where these applications come unstuck
Paediatric surgery is a narrow subspecialty, and RACS' recency-of-practice standard — roughly twelve months worked in the specialty within the past twenty-four — assumes a documented, continuous caseload specifically in paediatric cases, not general surgery with occasional paediatric work folded in. A surgeon whose overseas practice mixed adult and paediatric caseloads needs to demonstrate the paediatric-specific component clearly, since RACS assesses comparability against Australian paediatric surgical training specifically.
An honest read on this pathway
RACS' three outcomes apply here as elsewhere: substantially comparable up to twelve months FTE supervised practice, partially comparable up to twenty-four, both under RACS-approved supervisors, with 28 days to accept the recommended pathway once issued. Paediatric Surgery carries no separate fast-track or reduced requirement within RACS' structure — it is one of nine specialties assessed on the same document-first, interview-if-needed basis.
