The Academic pathway is not a general alternative for a clinician with some research output — its bar (top-400 PhD, 40+ papers, professorial track) targets a genuinely narrow, senior academic cohort, and applicants should not assume it substitutes for the Generalist route on lighter grounds.

An honest read on this pathway

For most applicants the Generalist pathway is the realistic route, and it is a real commitment: Partially Comparable requires between six and twenty-four months FTE of prospectively approved supervised training plus named examinations including the Fellowship of RANZCOG oral exam, capped at three attempts. Substantially Comparable caps supervised practice at twelve months, matching RACP and RACS' equivalent ceiling. The five-option fork means getting the right pathway identified early genuinely changes the outcome.
