Which lists is Midwife on?

MLTSSL — Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. The widest list — occupations on the MLTSSL can access the points-tested permanent skilled visas including the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), which needs no state nomination or employer.

CSOL — Core Skills Occupation List. The employer-sponsorship list — occupations on the CSOL can be nominated for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) and the Employer Nomination Scheme 186.

What the assessment actually involves

ANMAC assesses Midwife through the same Full or Modified structure as the nursing codes, but the Full stream is materially narrower. Where a registered nurse can enter it from seven comparable countries, midwifery's Full stream covers only Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States, requires a minimum Bachelor of Midwifery, and requires current registration as a midwife in that same country. The Modified stream remains open to anyone currently registered as a midwife in Australia or New Zealand.

Where these applications come unstuck

The most common misstep is assuming that a nursing qualification with midwifery practice inside it satisfies this code. The Full stream is built around a midwifery qualification and midwifery registration in a named country, not around midwifery hours worked under a nursing registration. Where an applicant does not meet the midwifery-specific criteria, Midwife is also one of the three general codes ANMAC falls back to when work experience does not support a specific specialisation.

An honest read on this pathway

On the MLTSSL and CSOL with the full visa range, the same footprint as the Registered Nurse codes. The narrower Full stream is the real constraint, and for applicants from countries outside Ireland, the UK and the US the practical route usually runs through Board registration first and a Modified assessment afterwards. Whether that sequence works for a particular history is a question for a MARA-registered agent rather than a web page.
