What the assessment actually involves
Historian is a VETASSESS Group A occupation — the simplest pathway shape in this family, and also the least forgiving. There is only one route: an AQF Bachelor degree or higher in a field highly relevant to Historian, plus at least one year of highly relevant employment in the last five years. Unlike Group B, C or D, there is no fallback pathway trading a longer employment record for a less relevant qualification. VETASSESS states on its own page that this occupation is only available for the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa, subclass 494.
Where these applications come unstuck
A degree in a related field is not automatically enough — VETASSESS's Group A test is relevance to the specific nominated occupation, and Historian has no Pathway 2, 3 or 4 to fall back on if the assessor decides that test is not met. Historian is also one of two named occupations VETASSESS explicitly excludes from Social Professionals nec, so someone whose historical research work does not cleanly fit "Historian" cannot use the nec code as a fallback for the same duties — VETASSESS names Historian on that page precisely to close that route.
An honest read on this pathway
This is a narrow, single-pathway occupation with a hard visa ceiling stated directly on VETASSESS's own page — the regional 494 visa only, regardless of how strong the underlying case is. Someone with a genuinely relevant Bachelor's degree and a clean, recent, well-documented year of highly relevant employment has a straightforward case to make; someone relying on a tangential qualification or older experience does not have the trade-off pathways this family's Group B and C occupations offer to compensate.
