Which lists is Agricultural Technician on?

ROL — Regional Occupation List. Occupations on the ROL are limited to the regional provisional visas — mainly the Skilled Work Regional 491 and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional 494.

Processing priority

Agricultural Technician isn't in any of the ANZSCO groups that Directions 121 and 122 list for the priority sectors. Some of the first group is defined by the job rather than the code: a nominated position directly involved in agriculture, aquaculture or fishing, one that directly supports mining, oil and gas or coal production, or one related to defence. Otherwise the application is processed after the priority sectors. For the permanent and provisional skilled visas, applicants who were in Australia when they applied come next, then those who applied from outside Australia. For the 482, Specialist Skills stream applications come before both.

VETASSESS assesses Agricultural Technician as a Group C occupation: a highly relevant field of study at a minimum AQF Certificate IV level, plus at least one year of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level within the last five years. Its own occupation page excludes Agricultural Consultant, Agricultural Scientist and Science Technicians nec by name, and its suitable-titles list includes "Dairy Technician" among the roles VETASSESS accepts under this code.

Where these applications come unstuck

This code is Regional Occupation List only, reaching the 407 training visa and the 491 and 494 regional-provisional visas. It does not reach the Skills in Demand visa or Employer Nomination at all. Its four more specific-sounding siblings — Agricultural and Agritech Technician, Animal Husbandry Technician, Aquaculture or Fisheries Technician and Irrigation Designer — sit on the Core Skills Occupation List instead, reaching sponsorship and direct permanent residence but not the training or regional routes this code reaches.

An honest read on this pathway

Someone assuming the plain, generic-sounding "Agricultural Technician" title is at least as good as its named siblings is wrong either way: this code cannot be used for employer sponsorship, and the siblings cannot be used for the training or regional-provisional routes. The pathway is genuinely open for a regional or training-visa plan, and genuinely closed for anyone whose plan depends on a sponsoring employer, however senior the applicant's actual dairy or cropping experience.
