Which lists is Gasfitter on?

MLTSSL — Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. The widest list — occupations on the MLTSSL can access the points-tested permanent skilled visas including the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), which needs no state nomination or employer.

CSOL — Core Skills Occupation List. The employer-sponsorship list — occupations on the CSOL can be nominated for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) and the Employer Nomination Scheme 186.

What the assessment actually involves

Gasfitter is named directly, alongside plumbing and draining, in NSW's list of licensed trades where "qualifications from outside Australia are not recognised for contractor licences or certificates in NSW" without a further state recognition process. It sits under ANZSCO unit group 3341 with Airconditioning and Mechanical Services Plumber, Drainer, Roof Plumber, Plumber (General) and Fire Protection Plumber, carrying the same full visa spread across MLTSSL and CSOL as most of that group. TRA's own gasfitting-specific assessment criteria could not be verified in this research — the authority's website returned no content when fetched.

Where these applications come unstuck

Gas work carries a safety dimension the general plumbing codes do not necessarily share, which is worth noting for anyone assuming a plumbing-general TRA outcome automatically covers gasfitting duties: NSW treats gasfitting as its own named licensed category, separate from plumbing and draining even though all three sit in one ANZSCO unit group. An applicant whose evidence base is general plumbing rather than gas-specific work should not assume the Gasfitter code, or the licence that follows it, is interchangeable with Plumber (General)'s.

NSW's licensing framework treats it as a genuinely separate licensed trade rather than a subset of general plumbing, and the same partial-credential pattern applies: TRA's offshore assessment produces an Offshore Technical Skills Record that NSW describes as only "partially" meeting Certificate III requirements, with gap training and supervised employment still required before a full gasfitting licence. Other states' specific gasfitting-licence requirements were not checked in this research.
