How long can you drive on your overseas licence in Australia before you have to convert it? It depends on your state, and it isn't the same everywhere.

New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory give you 3 months. Victoria and Tasmania give you 6.

The Australian Capital Territory hasn't published a clear time limit in the same way. Check with Access Canberra directly.

Most states ask for the same core documents: your original overseas licence, a NAATI certified translation if it isn't in English, and proof of your Australian address and identity.

Whether you also sit a test depends on a separate question: is your country on your state's recognised list? There's no single national list. Queensland's has 27 countries, New South Wales' has 28.

The process is the same shape everywhere. Check your state's recognised list. Translate your licence if it needs it. Gather your documents. Apply. Sit a test if required.

The most common mistakes: letting the overseas licence expire, leaving the translation to the last minute, booking a test too late, and driving past your state's deadline.

Fees, exact test formats and processing times are all set by the state issuing your licence, not nationally. Your own state's transport authority page is the one with the current answer.
