Moving to Australia with a UK driving licence? You can convert it without sitting the knowledge test or the practical driving test.
But there's a deadline. New South Wales gives citizens and permanent residents 3 months. Queensland gives anyone living there 3 months from when residency starts. Victoria's clock is 6 months, from the day you start living there.
Recognition skips the tests, but not everything. You still need an eyesight test, and proof of your identity and Australian residency.
Bring your original UK licence, proof of identity — a passport is ideal — proof of your Australian address, and a completed application form.
Visit your state's road authority with those documents, pass the eyesight test, pay the fee — which varies by state — and get your licence, often the same day.
Once your state's deadline passes, your UK licence is no longer valid to drive on there, even if the licence document itself hasn't expired.
The common mixup: assuming a failed eyesight test blocks conversion. It doesn't — it can mean a condition on your licence, like needing corrective lenses.
