Nursing is the biggest Filipino pathway into Australia — but it's not the only one, and it starts with a 4-year Filipino nursing degree.
Since 23 April 2026, AHPRA's English standard needs an overall IELTS Academic score of 7, with 7 in listening, reading and speaking, and 6.5 in writing.
PTE Academic needs 63 overall. OET is scored numerically now, with minimums of 350 in listening, 360 in reading, 350 in writing and 360 in speaking.
ANMAC and the Nursing and Midwifery Board aren't the same thing. ANMAC assesses your degree for the visa. The Board registers you to actually practise nursing here.
Registration with the Board runs through a self-check and portfolio, then an exam — multiple-choice questions plus the OSCE — before registration and an orientation to Australian health care.
Nursing isn't the only route. IT goes through ACS, engineering through Engineers Australia, hospitality covers chef and hotel manager roles, aged care runs through its own labour agreement, and teaching goes through AITSL.
Documentation runs through NBI clearance for police checks, PSA certificates for birth and marriage, and an apostille — the Philippines has been a Hague Apostille Convention country since 14 May 2019.
As at 30 June 2020, the Philippines was Australia's fifth-largest country of birth among overseas-born residents — 310,000 people, in the ABS's own estimate.
Two routes lead to permanent residence outside the points test. Aged care can run through the labour agreement to a subclass 186. Regional state nomination can run through a subclass 491 to a subclass 191.
Most Filipino applicants build their documentation portfolio over 6 to 12 months before lodging a visa — the Philippines' administrative system is strong, but assembling everything still takes time.
The common mixup: treating nursing as the default. IT runs through ACS, engineering through Engineers Australia, and aged care through its own labour agreement — each profession has its own assessing body.
