Moving from Hong Kong to Australia as an IT professional? There are two very different routes, and picking the wrong one can cost you years.

The Hong Kong special pathway skips the skills assessment and the points test completely. The trade-off is time: 4 years of Australian residence, or 3 years if that time is spent in a designated regional area.

It's open to Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holders who've held a subclass 482, 457, or 485 visa for the qualifying period.

Standard skilled migration works differently. It needs a skills assessment from the ACS and 65 or more points — but with a strong profile, permanent residence can take just 6 to 18 months.

For the standard pathway, most Hong Kong applicants use the ACS General Skills assessment. It costs $1,498, excluding GST, and ACS advises allowing 4 to 6 weeks.

It covers roles like software engineer, developer programmer, systems analyst, and ICT business analyst, among 8 relevant ANZSCO codes.

Every visa needs an English test. Competent, 6.0 per band, scores zero points. Proficient, 7.0, adds 10 points. Superior, 8.0, adds 20.

Here's how the HK pathway plays out. Arrive on a subclass 482. Live in Australia for 4 continuous years on that visa. Then apply for the subclass 189 Hong Kong stream — no ACS assessment, no points test.

Budget for the standard pathway without an agent: roughly $8,580 to $8,860, including the visa charge itself at $6,135 to $6,140.

If you use a migration agent, Migratio's own data across 686 quotes from 57 agents shows a median initial consultation fee of $220, with most quotes between $150 and $275.

Many Hong Kong IT professionals run both routes at once: start the 482 clock on the HK pathway, and lodge an expression of interest for the points-tested 189. Whichever comes through first, they take it.
