One card gets you across Melbourne's trains, trams and buses, plus V/Line services out to regional Victoria — it's called Myki.
You can pay two ways. Myki Money charges you after each trip — pay as you go. A Myki Pass charges you upfront for a set period of unlimited travel.
Inside Melbourne's CBD, there's a free tram zone. Travel entirely within it on a tram, and you don't need to tap on at all.
On trains, you tap on when you board and tap off when you leave. Trams are different: Yarra Trams says you only need to tap on, unless you're travelling only within Zone 2.
Victoria has switched on tap and go. Every myki-enabled train station had it by 14 June 2026, every tram from 21 June 2026, and Melbourne's bus network by 26 July 2026.
International students may qualify for the iUSEpass, which gives international-student fares instead of the adult rate. Eligibility depends on your visa type and your student status.
Fares are still zone-based. Zone 1 covers Melbourne's metropolitan area, Zone 2 extends further out, and more zones apply across regional Victoria.
Myki Money's full daily fare to travel anywhere in the state is normally $11.40 — but it's halved to $5.70 from 1 June until the end of 2026.
Since 1 January 2026, under-18s travel free on a Youth myki, and Seniors Card holders travel free on weekends statewide, with half off the full fare on weekdays.
The same Myki card, or contactless where it's rolled out, also works on V/Line trains and coaches out to regional Victoria — no separate card needed.
Myki only works in Victoria. Move to New South Wales and you'll need an Opal card; move to Queensland and it's a go card instead.
The rule people mix up: on trains, you always tap off. On trams, you usually don't have to — unless your trip stays only within Zone 2. What you're charged for missing a required tap off is on Transport Victoria's fares page.
