NZ to Australia Visa Options 2026: SCV 444 and the Direct Citizenship Path

What the automatic Special Category Visa (subclass 444) does and doesn't cover, and how the direct citizenship pathway works since 1 July 2023 — the residence years, no income test, no age limit. Also covers the subclass 461 for non-NZ partners and family, and why the old subclass 189 NZ stream is now closed. Figures as at September 2026.

Transcript

New Zealanders get a visa the moment they land in Australia — automatically. Four years later, many can go straight to citizenship, with no permanent visa needed in between.

It's the Special Category Visa, subclass 444 — no application, no fee, no set end date. It's granted automatically at the border to anyone travelling on a New Zealand passport.

The 444 itself lets you work for any employer and study without a separate student visa, for as long as you remain a New Zealand citizen. Medicare, Centrelink and study-loan access each run on their own separate eligibility rules.

The character test still applies. A sentence of imprisonment of 12 months or more is a substantial criminal record, and that can lead to refusal or cancellation.

Since 1 July 2023, there's a direct path to Australian citizenship — no permanent visa needed first. Live in Australia for 4 years, hold your SCV or a permanent visa for the last 12 months, with no more than 90 days away in that final year.

There's no income threshold, no points test and no skills assessment on this route. The citizenship test itself just requires you to be 18 or older — there's no upper age limit.

The New Zealand stream of subclass 189 was permanently closed to new applications from 1 July 2023. If you see an older guide describing a four-year, income-tested path to permanent residency, that's the closed stream it's talking about.

Your partner or children who aren't New Zealand citizens need their own visa — usually a subclass 461: $1,330 base, plus $675 for each additional adult and $325 for each additional child under 18. It's valid for 5 years.

The 461 doesn't lead to permanent residency on its own. A non-New Zealand family member needs their own pathway — a partner visa costs $11,710, from 1 July 2026.

Three dates matter. 10 December 2022, the old PR stream closed temporarily. 1 July 2023, it closed for good and the direct citizenship path opened. 1 July 2026, the current visa charges — including the 461 — took effect.
