Transcript

South Africans researching an Australian visa mostly land on five routes: skilled, employer-sponsored, student, partner, and parent.

The most direct route, a subclass 189, needs a minimum of 65 points to be invited. Competitive occupations often need 75 to 90 points or more.

State nomination adds 5 points on a subclass 190. Regional nomination adds 15 points on a subclass 491.

English fluency pays off on the points test. IELTS 7.0 in each band adds 10 points. IELTS 8.0 in each band adds 20.

To qualify at all, you need Competent English. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025: IELTS 6 in each of the 4 components, or PTE Academic 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing, and 54 speaking.

Electricians and plumbers go through TRA's Offshore Skills Assessment Program before they migrate: documentary evidence, a technical interview, and a practical test, totalling $5,320 over about 15 weeks.

Engineers go through Engineers Australia's Competency Demonstration Report. The fee is $1,034, and standard applications generally take 15 weeks to be assigned an assessor.

Accountants pay less. CPA Australia charges $514 offshore or $565 onshore. The Institute of Public Accountants charges $595.

The subclass 482 lets you work for a sponsoring employer for up to 4 years, needing at least 1 year of relevant work experience.

The student pathway runs a subclass 500, needing a course of at least 92 weeks, into a subclass 485 graduate visa with 2 to 3 years of work rights.

A partner visa, whether it's the 820, 801, 309 or 100, carries one charge: $11,710, covering the whole journey.

Parent visas show the trade-off plainly. The contributory subclass 143 costs $49,900 but Home Affairs estimates about 15 years. The non-contributory subclass 103 costs far less, but the wait is about 33 years.
