On the 23rd of March 2024, Australia replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant test for student visas with a new Genuine Student requirement. Here's exactly what changed.
The old test asked whether you'd genuinely leave Australia once your subclass 500 visa ended. The new one asks something different: is study genuinely your main reason for coming.
You answer this as a set of online questions in your application itself, not one long statement. Each answer has a 150 word limit.
There are seven areas. Why this course and provider. Why Australia. How it fits your background. Your career goals. How you'll fund it. Your plans after study. And your ties to home.
Generic answers don't satisfy the assessment. A line like 'Australia has good universities' says nothing about you specifically.
Refusals commonly come from the same handful of patterns. A course that doesn't fit your study or career history. Funding that looks borrowed rather than genuine. Weak ties to home. Or generic, boilerplate answers.
None of this stops you moving on afterwards. Many students genuinely transition to a post study work visa, subclass 485, or a skilled pathway, once study is done.
If your subclass 500 is refused on Genuine Student grounds and you're onshore, you generally have around 28 days to seek a review at the Administrative Review Tribunal.
A fresh application is also possible from offshore, but the previous refusal will be considered. It has to explicitly address the reasons you were refused, not just repeat the same answers.
The single biggest mistake is treating this as paperwork: a template answer, filled in generically. The assessment is looking for a specific, personal, consistent case for why you, this course, right now.
