Training as a motor mechanic is one of the cheaper visa pathways for international students in Australia. But the course itself is only half the timeline.
The qualification is a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology. The code is AUR30620, delivered by registered training organisations across Australia.
Course length varies by provider. Commonly somewhere between twelve months and two years for a full-time international student, so check the specific length your RTO publishes.
While you study, standard student visa work rights apply: up to forty eight hours a fortnight when your course is in session, and no cap during scheduled breaks.
Trades Recognition Australia, TRA, is the skills assessment authority for Motor Mechanic, ANZSCO three two one two one one.
Most graduates without prior trade employment go through TRA's Job Ready Program. A Provisional Skills Assessment first, then Job Ready Employment, then a Job Ready Workplace Assessment, and finally the Job Ready Final Assessment.
That employment stage is at least twelve months of full-time work with a TRA-approved employer, monitored the whole time.
TRA does not accept work experience on its own as a substitute for the Certificate III. The qualification is required before you can be assessed.
Beyond tuition, budget for Overseas Student Health Cover, tools and workshop equipment, TRA assessment fees when you apply, and your living costs.
After the Certificate III, eligible graduates may move onto a Temporary Graduate visa, subclass four eight five, or straight into trade employment on another pathway.
So the plan looks like a two-year course, but it actually takes course, plus twelve months of employment, plus TRA's assessment stages either side of it.
The most common mistake is budgeting for the course alone. Get an honest read from a MARA-registered agent on the realistic total timeline before you enrol.
