New Zealanders don't apply for a visa to live in Australia — they're granted one automatically at the border, but it's temporary, not permanent residency.

It's called the Special Category Visa, subclass 444. It carries no conditions, so there's no work restriction — but it's temporary, and a new one is granted every time you re-enter.

From 1 July 2023, New Zealand citizens holding an SCV are treated as permanent residents for citizenship purposes — without first needing a separate permanent visa.

When your permanent-resident clock starts depends on your first SCV. Before 1 July 2022, it's backdated to 1 July 2022. Between then and 30 June 2023, it starts on your first SCV.

To apply for citizenship, the general residence requirement is 4 years of presence, including the last 12 months as a permanent resident. Absences of up to 90 days in that final year can still count.

The dedicated New Zealand stream of the subclass 189 skilled visa is closed to new primary applicants — it required an application made before 10 December 2022.

The 2023 change is for citizenship only — it doesn't touch social security. Most payments need 'protected SCV holder' status, generally meaning you were here on the SCV on 26 February 2001.

Sponsoring a partner visa needs an eligible New Zealand citizen — a protected SCV holder — an Australian citizen, or an Australian permanent resident.

20 years on the SCV doesn't make anyone a citizen automatically — the 2023 change only counts time toward citizenship. Citizenship by conferral is still a separate, deliberate application.
