A subclass 417 or 462 working holiday visa doesn't lead to permanent residence on its own — but four real pathways off it do.
The basics: 12 months on your first visa, then up to 3 years total if you complete 3 months of specified work for a second year and 6 months for a third.
If you hold a UK passport, you don't need to do any specified work at all for a second or third subclass 417 — that exemption has applied since 1 July 2024.
Pathway 1: employer sponsorship. Your occupation needs to be on the Skills in Demand 482 occupation list, and you need at least 1 year of relevant work experience — not 2.
Your working holiday work in that occupation can count toward the year — but the job title matters. A Chef or a Cook reaches the 482. A Cafe or Restaurant Manager doesn't.
If the 482 leads to permanent residence, the Temporary Residence Transition stream of the subclass 186 generally needs 2 years of eligible sponsored employment within the 3 years before you apply.
Pathway 2 skips the employer entirely: a direct skilled visa. You need a positive skills assessment and at least 65 points just to enter the pool — the score that actually gets an invitation varies.
For visas finalised to 30 June 2026, a subclass 189 took 6 to 9 months, a subclass 190 took 5 to 17 months, and a subclass 491 took 5 to 18 months — and that's after you're invited, not before.
Working holiday work generally doesn't count toward those points at all, unless it was clearly in your nominated occupation at ANZSCO skill level 1, 2 or 3.
Pathway 3: study. A student visa gives you 48 hours of work a fortnight in term, and afterwards the 485 Temporary Graduate visa's Post-Higher Education Work stream is usually 2 to 3 years — up to 5 years for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders.
Pathway 4: a genuine relationship. A de facto partner visa typically needs 12 months of cohabitation evidence; if you're married, there's no minimum time. No points test, no skills assessment, no employer needed.
The mistake that costs people the most time: assuming a job title in a growing industry automatically qualifies. Check your exact occupation against the current list before you plan around it.
