Which lists is External Auditor on?

MLTSSL — Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. The widest list — occupations on the MLTSSL can access the points-tested permanent skilled visas including the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), which needs no state nomination or employer.

CSOL — Core Skills Occupation List. The employer-sponsorship list — occupations on the CSOL can be nominated for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) and the Employer Nomination Scheme 186.

Being on a list makes the occupation nominatable for these visas — each visa still has its own requirements (points, age, English, a positive skills assessment, and for sponsored visas a willing employer or state).

Processing priority

External Auditor isn't in any of the ANZSCO groups that Directions 121 and 122 list for the priority sectors. Some of the first group is defined by the job rather than the code: a nominated position directly involved in agriculture, aquaculture or fishing, one that directly supports mining, oil and gas or coal production, or one related to defence. Otherwise the application is processed after the priority sectors. For the permanent and provisional skilled visas, applicants who were in Australia when they applied come next, then those who applied from outside Australia. For the 482, Specialist Skills stream applications come before both.

What the assessment actually involves

CPA Australia, the IPA and Chartered Accountants ANZ assess External Auditor — the same three accounting bodies that cover the rest of this family — and its competency table adds Audit and Assurance on top of the seven areas shared with Accountant (General) and Management Accountant. This is the code most easily confused with Internal Auditor (221214), but the two are not assessed by the same bodies at all: Internal Auditor is VETASSESS's occupation, which explicitly excludes External Auditor from its criteria. ANZSCO's own task description for External Auditor is reporting outward — designing systems and controls to meet external financial reporting requirements — the opposite direction to internal governance work.

Where these applications come unstuck

The single biggest trap in this code is nominating it for genuine internal-audit experience, or the reverse. External Auditor goes to CPA/IPA/CAANZ and is assessed on outward-facing statutory reporting competency; internal-audit work assessed against that bar reads as the wrong occupation and is likely to fail on relevance. As with Taxation Accountant, CPA's own Foundation Exam bridge does not cover the Audit and Assurance area, so a degree missing that specific subject needs a genuine accredited unit rather than a quick top-up. Signing off statutory audits also needs separate ASIC Registered Company Auditor registration.

An honest read on this pathway

External Auditor carries the full MLTSSL/CSOL visa spread, but the code sits right next to a genuinely different occupation with a different assessing authority, and applicants researching "auditor" online often find material about the wrong one. Confirm which of the two — outward statutory reporting or internal governance and compliance — actually describes the work before nominating, since the bodies do not cross-check each other's occupation. A positive migration skills assessment is not ASIC auditor registration and does not by itself let anyone sign off a company's statutory accounts.
