Processing priority
Archivist isn't in any of the ANZSCO groups that Directions 121 and 122 list for the priority sectors. Some of the first group is defined by the job rather than the code: a nominated position directly involved in agriculture, aquaculture or fishing, one that directly supports mining, oil and gas or coal production, or one related to defence. Otherwise the application is processed after the priority sectors. For the permanent and provisional skilled visas, applicants who were in Australia when they applied come next, then those who applied from outside Australia. Archivist reaches a single visa subclass, skilled employer sponsored regional, on ROL alone. Its required field of study is named precisely: archival, archives administration or archives science, described by VETASSESS as preparing people "to identify, manage, preserve, and make available records with long-term value for documentation, legal, research, and other purposes." The occupation follows the standard Group B four-pathway shape — the most forgiving of those, reachable with six years of employment including at least one highly relevant year in the last five, needs no relevant field of study at all, while the strictest needs one year of post-qualification, highly relevant employment.
Where these applications come unstuck
This code's own VETASSESS page carries no "occupations considered suitable / not considered" section — a genuine feature of the page, not a research gap — so the confusable-code guidance that steers applicants away from wrong nominations elsewhere in this family simply is not published for Archivist. That leaves the field-of-study line as the main safeguard: general "information management" or "records" experience without training specifically in archival theory and practice risks a mismatch, since Records Manager and Health Information Manager each name their own, differently worded fields and neither treats Archivist experience as equivalent to their own.

The employment-only fourth pathway makes this a realistic route for an experienced archivist without a narrowly-matched degree, provided the qualification level itself — Bachelor or higher — is met. Its visa reach is the narrowest a code in this family can have, one subclass only, so the regional commitment that comes with it is not optional context; it is the entire available pathway for this specific occupation.
