Which lists is Microbiologist on?

MLTSSL — Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. The widest list — occupations on the MLTSSL can access the points-tested permanent skilled visas including the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), which needs no state nomination or employer.

Processing priority

Microbiologist isn't in any of the ANZSCO groups that Directions 121 and 122 list for the priority sectors. Some of the first group is defined by the job rather than the code: a nominated position directly involved in agriculture, aquaculture or fishing, one that directly supports mining, oil and gas or coal production, or one related to defence. Otherwise the application is processed after the priority sectors. For the permanent and provisional skilled visas, applicants who were in Australia when they applied come next, then those who applied from outside Australia. Microbiologist's own page states directly that it recognises "biotechnologists, life scientists, biochemists, botanists, marine biologists, and zoologists as closely-related fields within the same classification group" — an explicit authority acknowledgement that this whole cluster of life-science titles is adjacent, without drawing a single bright line between them beyond each page's own per-occupation exclusion list. Its own page excludes Clinical Research Scientist specifically.

Where these applications come unstuck

Because VETASSESS names the whole cluster as closely related rather than clearly separated, the practical test is each pair's own stated exclusions rather than a general assumption of interchangeability: Food Technologist's page excludes Microbiologist by name, so food-safety and food-microbiology testing work does not automatically belong here just because the employer is a food manufacturer. Clinical Research Scientist is excluded outright, which matters for anyone whose microbiology work sits closer to clinical trial support than to general microbial research.

An honest read on this pathway

Microbiologist sits on MLTSSL only, with no CSOL — reaching 189, 190, 407, 485, 491 and 494 but not the employer-sponsored 186 or 482. That's a real constraint for anyone assuming any life-sciences-cluster code opens a direct sponsorship route: it does not, here specifically, even though several of the closely-related occupations this page itself names — Life Scientist (General), Botanist, Marine Biologist, Zoologist — do carry CSOL and reach all eight visas.
