VETASSESS states plainly that the title alone is not enough — an applicant with no scholarly research duties would not meet the criteria, and teaching Diploma-level courses is not considered highly relevant employment for this code.

Where these applications come unstuck

The qualification and employment wording on this page reads almost identically to University Tutor's, which makes it easy to assume the two are graded versions of one job. VETASSESS's own University Lecturer page states directly that University Tutor is not considered under this code — they are separate assessments. The real gate for Lecturer is the indexed publication, not the job title or the teaching load, and conducting research without a qualifying publication in the last five years does not clear it.

This is the stronger of the two university-teaching codes for visa purposes: MLTSSL and CSOL placement reaches all eight subclasses in this family, including the independent 189 and the 485 graduate visa. The genuine constraint is evidentiary — an applicant needs to document a specific, indexed publication, not just describe an academic role, and that is a different kind of evidence-gathering exercise than most employment-based skills assessments require.
