Skills assessment
A positive skills assessment for University Tutor comes from:
- Vocational Education and Training Assessment Services (VETASSESS) (official site) · our guide to the VETASSESS process
What the assessment actually involves
VETASSESS assesses University Tutor under the same Group A structure as University Lecturer: a qualification comparable to an Australian Bachelor degree or higher, plus at least one year of post-qualification employment in the last five years at 20 or more hours a week, highly relevant to the nominated occupation. Unlike Lecturer, there is no publication requirement — the occupation's own task list allows for conducting research and preparing findings for publication, but a published or accepted output is not a condition of a positive outcome.
Where these applications come unstuck
Because the qualification and employment wording so closely mirrors University Lecturer's, it is tempting to assume the two codes sit on the same visa footing. VETASSESS's own Lecturer page states University Tutor is not considered under that code — they are two separate assessments that happen to ask for almost identical evidence, and nominating the wrong one does not get silently corrected.
An honest read on this pathway
University Tutor carries ROL placement only, reaching the 494 regional visa and nothing else in this family — no employer-sponsored 482 or 186, no independent 189, no 485. A PhD candidate tutoring while finishing a doctorate can hold a CV that reads almost identically to a colleague who has just been appointed Lecturer, yet sit on opposite sides of the independent-visa question purely on title and publication record. Worth confirming which of the two actually describes the role before assuming either one.
VETASSESS assesses qualifications and employment separately. Both need documentation that agrees with itself. The Employment History Builder and Document Vault organise each trail before you lodge.
