What the assessment actually involves
VETASSESS assesses Lifeguard as a Group D occupation — AQF Certificate III or higher plus highly relevant employment. The relevant industry credential, Royal Life Saving's Pool Lifeguard course, is built from the nationally recognised SISSS00133 Pool Lifeguard Skillset — a training-package skill set made up of AQF-aligned units, administered by Royal Life Saving Society Australia, rather than a standalone government licence.
Where these applications come unstuck
The specific trap for this code is assuming the Pool Lifeguard Skillset itself is the AQF Certificate III VETASSESS requires — it's a skill set built from AQF-aligned units, not automatically equivalent to a full Certificate III qualification, and whether it satisfies the occupation's qualification floor on its own was not confirmed in this research pass. Swimming Coach or Instructor's own suitable list explicitly excludes Lifeguard as NOT suitable under that code, so the two roles — teaching swimming and pool supervision or rescue — should not be conflated even where one person does both jobs.

Visa reach is 494 only — no employer-sponsored or points-tested route, despite Lifeguard sitting adjacent to several better-reaching coaching and instructor codes in the same broad aquatic-industry space, including Diving Instructor and Swimming Coach. The Skillset-based industry credential is a genuine national standard, but it operates alongside, not instead of, the separate VETASSESS qualification test — the two should not be treated as interchangeable.
