What they do not share is a single occupation description. Seven codes, one assessment standard

Electrical Engineer, Electronics Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Industrial Engineer, Production or Plant Engineer, Mining Engineer (excluding Petroleum) and Petroleum Engineer are all assessed as Professional Engineer by Engineers Australia. Every one of them can go through an accredited-qualification pathway if the degree is recognised under the Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord, or through a Competency Demonstration Report otherwise — three Career Episodes, a Summary Statement mapping each episode to the competency elements, a CPD record, and an employer reference. That process is the same across all seven codes. What changes from code to code is the subject matter your evidence has to demonstrate, and that is the part worth getting right before you start writing.

The lists don't tell you which one to pick

All seven codes sit on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List and the Core Skills Occupation List, so there is no ranking advantage to nominating one over another. That removes a temptation some applicants act on anyway — picking whichever code sounds closest to a stronger-sounding list position. Since the list positioning is identical, the only variable that should decide your nomination is which code your actual qualifications and work history support. Choosing for any other reason adds risk without adding opportunity.

Electrical Engineer vs Electronics Engineer

Electrical Engineer (233311) is built around power generation, transmission, distribution, industrial control systems, and electrical installation and testing. Electronics Engineer (233411) is built around electronic devices, circuits, communications systems and embedded systems. The two sit on identical lists, so the distinction is about accuracy of nomination, not strategy. An applicant whose real work is power-systems design does not become an Electronics Engineer by nominating that code — the Career Episodes still have to describe circuit or embedded-systems work to satisfy that competency set, and a mismatch between your work history and the nominated code is grounds for the assessor to send the application back.

Mechanical Engineer vs Industrial Engineer vs Production or Plant Engineer

These three share a unit group and a qualification standard, and they are the most commonly confused codes in this family. Mechanical Engineer (233512) is built around designing and developing mechanical systems, machines and equipment. Industrial Engineer (233511) is built around systems optimisation, production efficiency, workflow design and process improvement. Production or Plant Engineer (233513) is built around plant operations, production line management and coordinating equipment operation and maintenance. A job titled 'Production Engineer' does not settle which code applies — if the day-to-day work is designing mechanical systems, that is Mechanical Engineer; if it is optimising a manufacturing process, that is Industrial Engineer; if it is running and coordinating a plant's operations, that is Production or Plant Engineer. The title on your business card is not the evidence Engineers Australia reads.

Mining Engineer vs Petroleum Engineer, and the mining-mechanical overlap

Mining Engineer (excluding Petroleum) (233611) is built around ore extraction, mine planning and mining equipment. The 'excluding Petroleum' wording is not incidental — it explicitly separates the code from Petroleum Engineer (233612), which is built around oil and gas extraction: well design, reservoir characterisation, production optimisation and drilling coordination. Mining and petroleum work are treated as genuinely different specialisations, not two names for the same job. A second overlap worth watching is between mining and mechanical work: an applicant whose actual competency is mechanical design of equipment used on a mine site is not automatically a Mining Engineer for nomination purposes. If the primary competency being evidenced is mechanical design, Mechanical Engineer is the correct code, even though the equipment operates underground or in a pit.

When your role genuinely straddles two disciplines

Some roles legitimately mix disciplines — a production engineer who also does mechanical design work, or a mining engineer whose projects involve real mechanical specification. Engineers Australia's own guidance for choosing an occupation not explicitly listed is to pick the closest match by description and task rather than by job title, and the same logic applies here: identify where the bulk of your personally owned technical decisions sit, and nominate the code that matches that competency, not the one that matches your employer's org chart or the industry you happen to work in. What a Career Episode has to show at the discipline level

The Competency Demonstration Report structure — three Career Episodes, a Summary Statement, CPD evidence and an employer reference — is identical across all seven codes. What differs is the technical vocabulary and substance each episode needs to carry. An Electrical Engineer episode needs to show power-systems or distribution decisions you personally made. An Electronics Engineer episode needs circuit, embedded-systems or communications design work. A Mechanical Engineer episode needs mechanical design and analysis. An Industrial Engineer episode needs process or workflow optimisation you designed, not implemented on someone else's plan. A Production or Plant Engineer episode needs operational coordination decisions, still written at professional-engineer level rather than as a shift report. A Mining Engineer episode needs mine planning or extraction engineering. A Petroleum Engineer episode needs reservoir, well or drilling engineering. In every case, the episode has to read as a first-person account of what you decided, calculated or designed — not a summary of what the project delivered — because that is what the assessor is checking against the competency elements in your Summary Statement.

A positive outcome is a migration document, not a licence to practise

None of the seven codes in this family carry mandatory professional registration to work as an engineer in Australia — the title itself has no statutory protection, and Engineers Australia's own optional Chartered Professional Engineer credential is a career step, not a requirement to be employed.
