Skills assessment
A positive skills assessment for Geotechnical Engineer comes from:

What the assessment actually involves
Engineers Australia assesses Geotechnical Engineer, and the pathway is decided by your qualification rather than your experience. A degree accredited under the Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord goes through the accredited route; anything else goes through a Competency Demonstration Report. One catch specific to this code: EA also requires a CDR when you seek an occupation that differs from your accredited qualification title. Most geotechnical engineers hold a general civil degree, so nominating Geotechnical rather than Civil pushes them onto the CDR route even though their qualification is accredited.
Where these applications come unstuck
The career episodes have to read as geotechnical practice, not civil work that happened to involve soil. VETASSESS names Geotechnical Engineer in the exclusion list for Civil Engineering Technician, which shows how firmly the professional and technician levels are separated, and the same logic applies upward: site investigation supervised by someone else is weaker evidence than analysis and design you owned. EA also excludes PhD and MPhil research and lecturing from relevant skilled employment, which catches applicants whose strongest geotechnical work was academic.
An honest read on this pathway
On both the MLTSSL and the CSOL, so the full range of skilled and sponsored visas is open to the code. The friction is EA's queue rather than the assessment itself: standard applications generally take around 15 weeks just to be assigned to an assessor, and that is before anyone reads the file. Queensland requires registration to provide professional engineering services, and the ACT began requiring it for civil engineering from 6 March 2024, so the assessment is the start of the process rather than the end.
Preparing a CDR for Engineers Australia? The CDR Organiser structures your three career episodes and summary statement against the assessment criteria — your own writing, organised properly. Engineers Australia runs plagiarism detection, so a ghost-written CDR is a real risk to your application.
