Skills assessment
A positive skills assessment for Quantity Surveyor comes from:
- The Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) (official site)
What the assessment actually involves
AIQS assesses through one of five pathways depending on where and how the qualification was obtained. Only an AIQS-accredited Australian bachelor's or postgraduate degree qualifies for Pathway 1; most applicants trained overseas (including common source countries like India, Pakistan and the Philippines) apply under Pathway 3. AIQS assesses the qualification first — a strong work history cannot offset a qualification that doesn't satisfy the relevant pathway's criteria, and demonstrated competency must cover at least two of three core competencies plus one specialist competency.
Where these applications come unstuck
The qualification-first structure catches applicants who assume extensive experience can substitute for an underqualifying degree — AIQS's own guidance is explicit that it cannot. Choosing the wrong pathway for the qualification's country and institution of origin is the other common error, since pathway eligibility is determined by AIQS's own accreditation and recognition tables rather than the applicant's judgement of equivalence.
An honest read on this pathway
Quantity Surveyor is on the MLTSSL and CSOL with the full visa spread, so the occupation itself is in strong demand — the constraint is almost entirely on the qualification side, which makes getting the pathway right upfront more important than for most other assessing bodies on this list.
Whichever authority assesses you, the paperwork is the part applicants underestimate. The Document Vault keeps a single register of every document, what it was needed for, and what is still missing.
