Which lists is Conservator on?

MLTSSL — Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. The widest list — occupations on the MLTSSL can access the points-tested permanent skilled visas including the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), which needs no state nomination or employer.

CSOL — Core Skills Occupation List. The employer-sponsorship list — occupations on the CSOL can be nominated for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) and the Employer Nomination Scheme 186.

Processing priority

Conservator isn't in any of the ANZSCO groups that Directions 121 and 122 list for the priority sectors. Some of the first group is defined by the job rather than the code: a nominated position directly involved in agriculture, aquaculture or fishing, one that directly supports mining, oil and gas or coal production, or one related to defence. Otherwise the application is processed after the priority sectors. For the permanent and provisional skilled visas, applicants who were in Australia when they applied come next, then those who applied from outside Australia. For the 482, Specialist Skills stream applications come before both.

What the assessment actually involves

Conservator is one of only two Group B occupations in this family — the other is Wine Maker — running four assessment pathways rather than one. Pathway 1 states the requirement plainly on its own page: "a qualification assessed as comparable to the education level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher degree and in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation." As with Wine Maker, the other three pathways let a less-relevant field of study be offset with additional years of employment, up to six years total.

Where these applications come unstuck

The Group B flexibility is a real advantage for a not-quite-matching qualification, but it comes with a heavier employment-evidence burden as the field-of-study match weakens — the pathway with the least-relevant qualification requires the most years to compensate. Whether Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material Professional Membership is itself required to work as a conservator in specific employment contexts — government heritage institutions in particular — was not something this occupation's own VETASSESS page addressed; that is a separate registration question from the migration assessment and worth checking directly with an employer or institution rather than assuming it is settled either way.

An honest read on this pathway

Conservator carries MLTSSL and CSOL, reaching all eight visas in this family, so the Group B structure here comes without a list-access penalty — unlike Wine Maker, which is Group B but sits on the much weaker ROL+CSOL combination. That makes Conservator a genuinely accessible code for a not-perfectly-matched qualification: the flexible pathway structure and the strong list position are both real, together.
